"Excessively Diverted"

I've been caught up in a freelance project. Really enjoying it but it has left me creatively dry for much else. I have managed to write a few new scenes for my WIP progress but have totally lacked any creative energy for this blog. I often have brilliantly worded posts but they usually hit when I am in the shower. By the time I get back to the computer it's time to dive back into the freelance project.

So am I making excuses about not keeping up with blog posts? Um, maaaaybe?

However, I have kept up with reading other blogs. Please take a moment to check out some of my favorites listed at the bottom of this blog page. And, yes I am soooooo behind at paying it forward to The Foodie Spot for the Stylish Blogger Award. I promise that IS on my agenda for the first part of this week.

It is time to get back into research mode for the project, which I happily found out has been extended another four months. Woo hoo! It will be a challenge to keep everything balanced, but it is doable. I am making strides. After all, I typed this post, didn't I?

Technical Issues

Hey everyone I am having design issues. Somehow the blog is no longer showing my Followers and I cannot get my Sociable button to appear. I am trying to get this fixed as soon as possible, so please be patient. I am less than techno savvy when it comes to these things, but I am trying.

Thanks,
Barb

A Writer Mom's Revelation

I had a revelation yesterday. At this time in my life, I am simply busy. My freelancing work has taken off (and this is good) leaving me with very little time to pursue my other writing, including daily blog posts. I certainly could force myself to make time to create some great posts, but honestly, right now I need a bit of free time each day to pursue other interests including reading, cooking and time with my family. For me, 2011 is going to be about balance. For the first time in 15 years I am working a full work week and that does not include my "job" as CEO of my household.

I am resolving to be okay with only posting to this blog once a week. It seems like Sunday is a good day for me to post. So there it is, I've taken my first step to finding my personal balance.

When things get really harried, I always remind myself to breathe. Breathe. A single deep breath can really help to clear the frenzies. And who doesn't experience a manic panic every now and then, especially if you are a mom. So, remind yourself to breathe. Breathe my friends.

I leave you with a quote from one of my favorite songs, aptly titled "Breathe (2AM)" by Anna Nalick.

"cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
and life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl
So cradle your head in your hands

And breathe, just breathe
Oh breathe, just breathe"

And again I am behind on my posts. Sigh….

So not that I’ve publicly acknowledged my blogging laziness we can move on. I wanted to talk about birthdays and birthday planning. It is on my mind because in March my son will be celebrating his Golden Birthday. If you don’t know what that is, it’s very simple. You celebrate your Golden Birthday when the age you are turning is the same as the number of the day you were born. He will turn 15 on March 15, hence his Golden Birthday.

The boy is NOT into birthdays anymore. In fact, he has made me promise that there will be no party and no fanfare. Well, I can agree to no party but no fanfare? It’s his GOLDEN birthday! I’ve been waiting fifteen years for this! There will be fanfare…not sure what kind yet, but I’m going to do something fun and special AND he will like it! I will attempt to post updates on my plans the closer we get to March.

Because I obviously was a party planner in a past life, I take an enormous amount of enjoyment writing articles about birthday party planning and gift giving advice. Last year I wrote a series of twelve articles for Helium.com regarding birthday party theme ideas for each month of the year. I thought it would be fun to revisit these pieces through this blog. Since their original publication, I’ve found even more birthday related fun stuff, including cool websites. I want to share this with all of you.

January Birthday Party Themes

January is a great month. As the first month of the year, there is always the excitement of newness and endless possibilities to be looked forward to in a new year. January also has some cool dates that can serve as inspiration for birthday party themes. There is the obvious New Year's Party theme if your birthday is the January 1 or within a week of the start of the month.

January 18 is A. A. Milne's birthday, making a Winnie the Pooh theme party for younger kids a cute idea. January 19 is National Popcorn and a great theme for a party as it can be tied into a movie night theme. Don't rule out Superbowl themes, WinterWonderland or even an tropical theme to blast away the winter blues.

A link to full January party theme ideas is here

If you are looking for fun websites to help with the party planning consider visiting:

As I post each month's Birthday Post, I will continue to add more great sites to visit for party planning.

If you are celebrating a January birthday I wish you the very happiest of tidings! Other cool people who share your birthday month include:  boxer Rocky Graziano (1/1), author Isaac Asimov (1/2), actor Robert Duvall (1/5), patriot Paul Revere (1/7), singer Pat Benatar (1/10), model Kate Moss (1/16), actress Betty White (1/17), disc jockey Wolfman Jack (1/21), gymnast Mary Lou Retton (1/24), hockey legend Wayne Gretsky (1/26), artist Jackson Pollock (1/28) and actress Minnie Driver (1/31.)

Saturday, January 1, 2011

I thought my first post of 2011 would be something profound. Well......not so much. I'm simply not into resolutions at the start of the new year and creating a list of them just for blogging purposes seems wrong. I do indeed have goals set for this year but these are things I've had in the works for a while and the changing of the calendar date from 2010 to 2011 did not inspire me to set them.

Instead I would like to share with you a brief montage of topics I will be talking about, writing about and potentially ranting about in 2011.

Writing * Disney * Parenting * Parenting Teens * Books * Movies * Quotes * Travel  *  Domestic Life * Pets

I may know what I want to talk about this year but I don't know what else this year is going to bring. It will be an adventure and I like adventures. I do know I will continue to live each day happy and strong. I will love and laugh and make an impression.

Leaving you today with a favorite Richard Bach quote. It seems appropriate.

"Don't turn away from possible futures before you're certain you don't have anything to learn from them."
